Ways to Save Energy in the Winter
It’s not yet halfway through October—but winter is just around the corner! Soon temperatures will start dropping and we’ll be staying inside more and more. While you want to be cozy and comfortable, it’s important to think about ways to save money.
Fortunately, there is plenty you can do to help reduce your energy bills while also staying nice and toasty!
Insulate your home.
The fall is a great time to insulate your home so it’s energy-efficient in time for the winter. Proper amounts of insulation will help keep your home warmer during the cold season (and many older homes aren’t sufficiently insulated). Our insulation division, Mooney & Moses Insulation, offers insulation products for your home.
Install an insulated garage door.
Is your garage door old or damaged? Before it gets cold, install a new one. It’s the perfect time for garage door replacement—and Overhead Door Co. of Greater Cincinnati offers a variety of energy-efficient insulated doors.
Besides installing new insulation and a new garage door, there are other ways you can save energy (and money) this winter!
Replace your furnace filters.
Dirty furnace filters can cause your system to run less efficiently, which increases the risk of an untimely breakdown. Replace your the filters on a regular basis (generally, every one to three months depending on how frequent your heating system runs).
Buy ENERGY STAR® qualified products.
There are many ENERGY STAR qualified appliances and other products available that can help make your home more energy-efficient. Such products include:
- Heat pumps
- Ductless heating
- Air purifiers
- Water heaters
- Light bulbs
- Kitchen appliances (refrigerators, dishwashers, etc.)
- And more
Use appliances and electronics efficiently.
This one seems like a no-brainer, but it’s worth repeating—it’s simple and doesn’t cost you any money! You can save energy by turning off lights when you leave, unplugging electronics, turning off computers when they aren’t in use for longer periods, waiting to run the dishwasher until it’s completely full, etc.
Before it gets cold and we start experiencing severe weather, it’s also a good idea to make sure your gutters aren’t damaged and causing moisture problems, such as basement flooding, roof leaks and more.
