Do you need to replace the garage door for your home or business? You may be wondering what type of garage door opener you need. While you need to talk to a garage door company, it can be helpful to know a little information on the front end.
There are three different types of garage door openers:
- Screw drive
- Belt drive
- Chain drive
Screw drive garage door openers use a steel drive screw that is directly engaged with the motor. Screw drive openers are maintenance-free (they don’t require additional lubrication), fast and fairly quiet. They also provide maximum power for heavy and wider doors and are, therefore, good for commercial garage doors—doors for warehouses, firehouses, storage facilities, etc.
The opener that offers the quietest operation is the belt drive garage door opener—it uses rubber belts, preventing the loud metal-on-metal contact that occurs in other openers. Although these openers may require a larger upfront investment, it may be worth it, particularly if the garage door is adjacent to or near a bedroom or home office. Belt drive garage door openers also have fewer moving parts than other types of openers.
Chain drive garage door openers offer highly reliable operation and are ideal for most doors. Although a little noisier than screw drive and belt drive openers, chain drive garage door openers are the most economical choice. Also, units that hide the chain may be a little quieter in operation.
Do You Need a New Garage Door Opener?
Garage door openers are generally reliable, but it’s not completely unheard of for one to stop working. There is a problem with your system that requires immediate inspection and assistance if:
- Your garage door won’t open or opens only partially
- Your garage door won’t close or closes only partially
- There is a loud grinding noise when your garage door opens or closes
- The motor runs but the garage door doesn’t open or close
