Anyone else still dreaming about turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, and pumpkin pie? Well, Thanksgiving is over, but winter is on its way and Christmas is right around the corner! This also means plunging temperatures—and maybe even snow.
Is your home prepared for the cold season ahead? If not, the garage door is a great place to start! So, how do you winterize your garage door and make sure it’s in the right condition?
What You Can Do
Sooner rather than later, we recommend doing a few things to make sure your garage door is ready to handle the cold months ahead.
We recommend checking the batteries in the remote and keypad. If it’s been a few years since you replaced the batteries or if you can’t even remember the last time you did, it’s a good idea to replace them. This is one of the easiest ways to help winterize your garage door.
Buying a backup battery can also be a great idea—garage door battery backup systems can be very convenient, particularly in the winter!
Inspect Your Door
In our opinion, this is one of the most important tips! Call your local garage door company so they can come out and inspect your door and make sure it’s in proper working order. If your garage door is closed and you can see light shining through anywhere or visible rips or tears on the bottom seal, we recommend calling a professional for repair.
Is your garage door insulated? If your door is old or damaged, consider replacing it with an insulated model. We offer many different energy-efficient garage doors with insulation (like Overhead Door’s Thermacore® doors) to help you reduce heating costs in the winter.
What Else You Can Do
There are other ways you can make sure your garage and home are ready to handle the winter!
- Clean your garage door to help keep it in good condition (it may be a good idea to call your local garage door professionals before using a cleaner)
- Replace outdoor lighting
- Put away any spring and summer tools (gardening equipment, lawn mower, sprinkler, etc.) you won’t need again until next year
